LECTURE INFORMATION
Course List and Description:
In this short course, there are six intensive courses that are designed to give students a broad understanding of some of the contemporary issues that Indonesia faces as the result of the digital transformation. Each course will take 4 hours, and the total contact hours for all lecture series are 24 hours.
Lecturer
Suci Lestari Yuana, S.I.P., M.I.A.
Dr. Suci Yuana is a lecturer in the Department of International Relations, Faculty of Social and Political Sciences, Universitas Gadjah Mada. She is currently a Ph.D. candidate at Copernicus Institute of Sustainable Development, Utrecht University. She started her Ph.D. in 2017 and her research focuses on conflict and controversies of the platform economy. Her recent paper uses discourse and dramaturgy analysis to unpack the conflict of ridesharing and investigate the battleground in multi-layered dimension. Some of her recent research titles include “Informality and Institutional Work during the Covid-19 Crisis: The Case of Motorbike Online Taxi (Ojol) in Indonesia” and “Mundane Circular Economy Policy : Mainstreaming Circular Economy through the Agency of Schools”.
Class Description
In the era of digital disruption and economic transformation, the gig economy has emerged as a dynamic and transformative force, significantly impacting the employment landscape. This course, “Gig Economy in Indonesia: Practice and Challenges,” invites participants into an immersive exploration of the intricate dynamics, practices, and socio-economic implications of gig work in the Indonesian context. The course delves into the evolution of gig work, the ecosystem of gig platforms, the legal and regulatory frameworks governing this sector, and the nuanced challenges faced by gig workers and the broader society.

Tapiheru Joash Elisha Stephen, S.I.P., M.A., Ph.D.
Dr. Tapiheru Joash is a seasoned researcher and lecturer with a deep understanding of public policy dynamics and wealth of experience working in the public policy sector. He has been a lecturer at the Department of Public Policy and Management, Faculty of Social and Political Sciences since 2016. With a Ph.D. in Political Science and Government from the University of Essex, Dr. Joash brings a wealth of theoretical knowledge and practical experience to his work. He has made significant contributions to the field through his research endeavors and continue to be actively engaged in advancing political discourse, with specific research interests in border governance, identity and multiculturalism, political theory, discourse, and ideology. In 2015, he was a researcher in the research team on Welfare and Citizenship Regimes in the Indonesian Extractive Industries Sector initiated by PolGov and the PWD Project.
Class Description
As one of the world’s largest democracies, Indonesia presents a compelling case study for understanding the impact of digital platforms, social media, and online discourse on political processes, civic engagement, and governance. This course delves into the complexities of Indonesia’s political landscape, examining how digital technologies have reshaped the dynamics of citizen participation, political communication, and electoral processes, especially during the 2024 General Election, which saw the massive utilisation of digital technology in its campaign.

Dr. Ardian Indro Yuwono, SIP, MA
Ardian Indro Yuwono is a lecturer in the Department of Communication Science at Gadjah Mada University (UGM). His latest educational attainment was a Doctorate in Cultural and Media Studies from the Graduate School of Gadjah Mada University. His expertise lies in the field of Video Game Studies, with specific interest in topics such as political economy of media, video games, new media, pop culture, manga & anime. Some of his recent publications include “Digital Traveling: Ethnographic Study of Game Playing Practices as a Virtual Tourism Space” (2022), “Female Masculinity Representation in Still Sick Yuri Manga” (2023), and “The conventional media’s political economy practices in the media convergence era: Case study of labor commodification in TV industry” (2023).
Class Description
Over the past few years, Indonesia’s gaming industry has grown and developed substantially, with a report from Steam showing that Indonesian gaming publishers have published around 256 games on the Steam platform (the most in Southeast Asia). Furthermore, Indonesia has also seen the rapid rise of its eSports scene, in which the industry was valued at approximately 9.73 million USD, making it one of the fastest-growing eSports markets in the world. In this course, we will learn more about the development of the gaming industry in Indonesia, some of its key issues, and its effect on Indonesia’s national economy.

Dr. Suzie Handajani, M.A.
Dicky Sofjan is a Core Doctoral Faculty in the Indonesian Consortium for Religious Studies (ICRS), which is a consortium of three universities based at the Graduate School in UGM. Thus, the Inter-Religious Studies, is an international, interdisciplinary and interreligious Ph.D. program. Apart from teaching at the Graduate School, Dicky Sofjan has also been involved in the Educational Exchange Committee of the American-Indonesian Exchange Foundation, which manages the Fulbright scholarship. Dicky Sofjan is also the Director of the Globethics.net Indonesia Office, located in the UGM Graduate School.
Class Description
Indonesia, a vibrant archipelago, is a mosaic of diverse cultures and ethnicities. This course, “Understanding Cultural Diversity and Ethnicity in Indonesia,” offers an enriching exploration into the intricate tapestry of Indonesia’s cultural landscape. Participants will embark on a journey to comprehend the historical, social, and geographical factors that have contributed to the nation’s rich cultural diversity. Through a multidisciplinary approach, this course seeks to foster a deep appreciation for Indonesia’s ethnic pluralism, providing participants with the tools to navigate and engage with this diversity in meaningful ways.

Novi Kurnia, M.Si., M.A., Ph.D.
Novi Kurnia is a lecturer and researcher at the Department of Communication Science at Faculty of Social and Political Sciences, Universitas Gadjah Mada, Yogyakarta, Indonesia. Kurnia is also a researcher at Pemantau Regulasi dan Regulator Media (PR2Media), a research centre on media regulation and regulator, in Yogyakarya, Indonesia. She finished her PhD study at Flinders University, South Australia, in 2014. Her thesis was on women film directors and their films in post-New Order Indonesia. Kurnia is also the founder and the chair-person of IF!fest (Indonesian Film Festival) which was held in Adelaide in 2006, 2008 & 2009. She is also an organizer as well as jury for several local and international film festivals. Her main interest is gender and media, film studies, political economy of media, media regulation, and digital literacy. Her works have been published in national and international journals and books.
Class Description
Indonesia has seen rising momentum on addressing gender and social inclusion, including with the recent Sexual Violence Crimes Law (UU TPKS). However, women and minority groups still find structural barriers and challenges, especially with the rise of new issues, such as online gender violence. This course dives into persisting challenges around equitable participation, barriers faced by vulnerable communities, and the dangers of digital marginalization in Indonesia’s technology-driven landscape. Students will evaluate policies and social innovation opportunities to foster safe digital access ensuring no one is left behind.

Dr. Ario Wicaksono
Ario Wicaksono has been a lecturer at the Department of Management and Public Policy (DMKP) FISIPOL UGM since 2009. He completed his PhD program studies in Political Science and Policy Studies at the Institute for Governance and Policy Analysis (IGPA), Faculty of Business, Government and Law, University of Canberra, Australia in 2021. Mr. Wicaksono currently serves as Secretary of the Public Policy and Management Department of FISIPOL UGM for the 2021-2024 period. His research interests include policy transfer issues, the role of experts and expertise in the policy process, higher education policy, and organizational studies in the public sector.
Class Description
In this engaging workshop, participants will learn how to write a policy brief article covering social and political issues, both on the Indonesian context and internationally. The workshop cumulates in a polished policy brief draft as your final summer course assignment.
Assessment
At the end of the lecture series, students will be assessed through final assignments along with their attendance and class participation with the details below:
